Nancy J. Merritt named College of Business dean

Nancy J. Merritt, senior associate dean of the College of Business Administration at Bowling Green State University, has been selected to head the College of Business at Indiana State University.

A professor of marketing at Bowling Green since 1988, Merritt served as interim dean of the College of Business Administration in 2005-06.

Merritt has experience in college development and fundraising, and strategic and operational planning. She developed executive, entrepreneurship, and business engagement programs, including a Center for Executive Studies and a Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership. She also worked with university development and corporate officers in formulating the Cooper Tire Teaching Mentorship.

“Nancy Merritt has extensive experience in teaching, research and community service, all the things that are so important to our mission at Indiana State. She also brings experience in college development and fund raising. These are vital skills as we look forward to the College of Business moving into a new home,” C. Jack Maynard, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said in announcing Merritt’s appointment.

In 2008, Indiana State University is scheduled to assume ownership of the Terre Haute Federal Building. Some renovation of the 1930s era structure will be necessary to accommodate the university’s College of Business, currently housed in a 15-story former residence hall. Significant funding for the relocation project is expected to come from outside sources.

“It is indeed a privilege to join Indiana State University and the Terre Haute and regional communities,” Merritt said. “The achievements of the faculty, staff, and students of the College of Business bode well for enhancing its contributions to the university and broader communities, as well as advancing the economic development of the region.

“I am excited about opportunities to engage in productive relationships with business and alumni, to focus on quality and reach of student and community programs, and to support faculty in their teaching and scholarship,” she added.

“The dean’s search committee interviewed a number of very strong candidates for this position, but Dr. Merritt’s credentials, experience, and skills made her an exceptional choice. We are very pleased to have her join the College of Business family and we look forward to her leadership as we advance the college’s reputation, visibility and influence,” said Connie McLaren, professor and program coordinator of operations management and analysis, and chair of the ISU search committee.

Merritt’s leadership at Bowling Green includes accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, AACSB International, programs for first-year business students, student learning assessment, and executive graduate studies.

Merritt has been recognized during her career as a teacher and researcher in the field of marketing, with emphasis on relationships among businesses and other organizations. She was inducted in the leadership honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa, and selected as a 2006 protégé in the Millennium Leadership Institute of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

She will assume her new duties Aug. 1, succeeding Ronald F. Green, who announced last fall that he would be stepping down as dean, a position he has held since 2002. Green has since been named dean of business at The Citadel.

A former retail business co-owner and manager, Merritt holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Montana State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. She is a member of the Academy of Marketing Science and the U.S. Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.
