Susan Meltzer, assistance vice president of risk management for Sun Life Financial in Toronto, will be visiting the Indiana State University campus as part of the Spencer Educational Foundation's Risk Manager in Residence program, Feb. 22-23.
The Risk Manager in Residence program is possible through a grant from the Spencer Foundation. Meltzer will share her expertise in the field and current trends in the insurance and risk management industry with faculty and students in the College of Business as well as with area industry leaders.
Meltzer began her career in risk management in 1983 with the Canada Development Corp. as coordinator of risk and insurance. She became Sun Life Financial's first risk manager in 1996 and has built a risk management program from the ground up, including adoption of an enterprise risk management approach.
She has been an active member of RIMS since 1983 and served as president of the Ontario chapter of RIMS from 1989 to 1990. As RIMS' 1999-2000 president, Meltzer presided over the society's 50th anniversary celebration and was instrumental in coordinating a $100,000 contribution to the Spencer Educational Foundation. She currently represents RIMS as president on the board of the International Federation of Insurance and Risk Management Associations.
Meltzer received the 2001 Don Stuart Award for outstanding achievement in risk management and the 2005 Goodell Award for lifetime achievement in the field. She develops and presents workshops that constitute credits toward RIMS fellow designation. She teaches risk financing, risk control and risk management at the University of Toronto and has been a Spencer Risk Manager in Residence at many major universities in the U.S. and Canada.
As part of Meltzer's visit, she will meet with representatives on Indiana State's Terre Haute campus as well as with industry executives in Indianapolis and with ISU's Networks Financial Institute. She will present to a variety of ISU insurance classes and meet and have dinner with the ISU Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma (the risk management, insurance and actuarial science collegiate fraternity), attend a reception in her honor in Indianapolis and meet with leaders of Indiana's chapter of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS).
An Open Forum with Meltzer is scheduled from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in the 11th floor conference room of the College of Business. Lunch will be served.
