ISU receives gift of $140,000 for Special Education Scholarship

October 12, 2021

A gift of more than $140,000 will create the Karl E. and Carol A. Brush Special Education Scholarship at Indiana State University.

Carol Brush, a Terre Haute native, graduated from ISU with a degree in special education in 1959 and a master's degree in 1967.  She spent her career teaching special education in the Indianapolis and New Palestine school systems. She died in 2017.

Karl Brush, who passed away in 2020, preserved Carol’s legacy through an estate gift received by ISU in 2021.

“They were good people, and this is representative of where their hearts were,” said Chuck Brush, nephew of the couple. "They never had any children, so I think they wanted to help students that could use some financial help and to provide a legacy."

Karl and Carol traveled extensively after retirement and were married for 55 years.

“The estate gift from Carol Brush and her husband, Karl, is a significant investment in our collective future,” said Brad Balch, interim dean of the Bayh College of Education. “This gift to support special education students could not be more timely, and it will no doubt have an enormous impact on our ability to address a critical need in Indiana and beyond. The generosity of Carol and Karl will help shape the lives of educators and the future of education itself for generations to come.”

Said Andrea Angel, Vice President of University Advancement and CEO of the ISU Foundation: "We are incredibly thankful for the generosity of Karl and Carol in creating this scholarship. This gift preserves their commitment to helping others and making a difference in the lives of students."
