Sycamores attend professional economics conferences

May 17, 2019

Nearly 20 Indiana State University students and faculty attended economic conferences in March.

Nineteen students and professors Katrina Babb, Debra Israel and Richard Lotspeich traveled to St. Louis for the Midwest Economics Association conference, March 15-17. The trip fulfilled requirements for Israel's intermediate economics course and special topics in behavioral economics class. It also fulfilled requirements for Babb's labor economics and gender and economics courses and was open to other economics majors.

The conference also provided an opportunity for students to listen to undergraduate and graduate students and economists present research in economics. Students who either currently or previously took gender and economics were able to go out to lunch with one of their textbook authors, Anne Winkler.

Upon returning to campus, students reported back to their classes so other economics students who were not able to attend learned from their experiences.

Earlier in March, economics major David Drummond presented research during the undergraduate student sessions on issues in political economy as part of the Eastern Economics Association conference in New York City, March 1-3.

Drummond also presented his research at the Midwest Economics Association conference later that month. He had the opportunity for networking, and student presenters at the MEA were given the extra opportunity of meeting research assistants at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis over lunch.

Sponsoring units at Indiana State include the following: the Center for Community Engagement domestic travel grant, Honors College, College of Arts and Sciences, Center for Student Research and Creativity, Career Center career readiness funding and the economics department.
