Teachers participate in math, reading summits at Indiana State

November 20, 2018

The Bayh College of Education welcomed hundreds of teachers, reading coaches and administrators to campus for the annual Duke Energy Power of Math and Power of Reading summits, Nov. 19-20.

Made possible through a grant from the Duke Energy Foundation and co-hosted by Indiana State University and the Indiana Department of Education, the summits provide educators in Duke Energy's Indiana service area with tools to help children with early development of math and reading skills.

The fourth year for the Duke Energy Power of Reading Summit, the event drew 442 teachers, reading coaches and administrators participate in the first day. This is the second year for the Duke Energy Power of Math Summit, day two had 247 teachers and math coaches participate.

"We are grateful that Duke Energy has made such an amazing commitment to the teachers and students in Indiana," said Judy Sheese, assistant dean in the Bayh College of Education and director of education student services. "This will be our biggest year yet for attendance at the summits. We had 150 more participants than last year, so that tells us there is a real interest in the speakers presenting and the information provided.

"Because of Duke Energy's generosity, we are able to bring in experts from all across the country to provide up-to-date information and strategies. The goal of each summit is to provide information that teachers can take back to their classroom and use immediately. This provides an immediate and positive impact on children in those classrooms," she added.
