School of Music to present Fall Choral Showcase

October 8, 2018

The Indiana State University School of Music will present a Fall Choral Showcase Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, in University Hall Theater, located in the Bayh College of Education building.

The concert will feature three Indiana State choral ensembles. The University Chorale, under the direction of Scott Buchanan, will perform a program focused on peace, love, hope and compassion. David Gibbs will serve as the accompanist.

"Our concerts don't usually follow a certain theme," said Buchanan. "However, I told my students that current events in our country, and across the globe, are really starting to frustrate and anger me. Therefore, I decided to program pieces that focus on the need for a humanity that is much more kind and gentle to one another. This is a powerful message of peace and hope for our community. I want our music to inspire a kind spirituality to those that hear it."

The Women's Choir will offer a diverse program including works by Felix Mendelssohn and Sergei Rachmaninoff, as well contemporary composers David Brunner, Vijay Singh and David Schwoebel. Jin Hee Kim is the accompanist.

"We have another talented freshman class this fall, which allows this ensemble to continue to grow, not only in size, but musically as well," said conductor Yana Weinstein.

The Sycamore Singers will open the concert with a variety of contemporary charts. The group will feature few upbeat Vocal Jazz arrangements, and a ballad or two. Under the direction of Loida Pineda Ku, a native of Mexico, the Singers will also present a few tunes from her home country. David Gibbs will serve as the accompanist.

"Our students are very fortunate to have another director to work with this year," said Buchanan. "Loida comes to us with an extensive background as a conductor and teacher. I am thrilled that she is sharing the music of Mexico with our singers."

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call 237-4590.
