The Indiana State University Symphony Orchestra will perform "Stories and Fairy Tales" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in Tilson Auditorium.
This free event will feature singers from the Indiana State Lyric Theater Workshop as they bring to life favorite scenes from comic operas including Rossini's "Cinderella," Mozart's "The Magic Flute," Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci" and Strauss's "Die Fledermaus." This lively evening will also feature music to the fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel" and Stravinsky's groundbreaking "Firebird Suite."
"It is a great pleasure to work with the excellent students in both the Symphony Orchestra and in the Lyric Theater workshop to present this program," said Erik Rohde, conductor of the State Symphony Orchestra. "The music is breathtaking -- there are moments in this concert of incredible beauty followed by such charm and humor that there will be entertainment for everyone."
This concert is a collaboration, bringing together two courses that normally don't get an opportunity quite like this.
"The chance for the singers to perform with full orchestra, and the chance for our orchestra to perform this great operatic literature with singers is unique for our students. We tried it out in rehearsals two years ago and had such fun and learned so much together that we knew we needed to put this concert together for the public," Rohde said.
The performance will feature voice students Logan Williams, Katie Kendall, Hye Jin Lim and Laura Fultz Sprouts in the opening of Mozart's "The Magic Flute," followed by a beautiful Mozart trio sung by Isis Jarnicki de Carvalho, Megan Berube and Zene Colson. Jarnicki de Carvalho, a graduate student from Brazil, will also be featured as Nedda in the famous Ballatella aria from "I Pagliacci." The whole company of singers will be featured in a scene from Rossini's version of "Cinderella," and the sparkling Finale of Act II from "Die Fledermaus."
After the operatic first half, the University Symphony Orchestra will return to the stage to perform Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite," a work that established the composer as a prominent figure in the Paris ballet scene in 1910 when it was premiered. The "Firebird Suite" tells an exotic tale out of ancient Russia and highlights one of the most famous French horn melodies in the orchestral repertoire, which will be performed by Professor Brian Kilp.
