The Indiana State University School of Music's Faculty Concert Series continues with a trombone recital by Randy Mitchell at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30 in the recital hall of the Landini Center for Performing and Fine Arts.

Colleagues Martha Krasnican on piano and Todd Gallagher on bass will join Mitchell. The first half of the recital will feature James Beckel's "Concerto for Trombone." Beckel, composer and principal trombone of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, wrote his trombone concerto in 2013. The concerto has rapidly become a standard work for trombone. In addition to the concerto, Mitchell and Krasnican will also perform Jean Michel Defaye's "In the Manner of Brahms" and an "Andante" by Eric Ewazen.

The second half will feature "Jazbo, " a jazz duo of trombone and bass. Mitchell and Todd Gallagher will perform jazz tunes by Kai Winding, JJ Johnson, Richard Rodgers, Frank Zappa and others.

Mitchell has been a member of the faculty of the School of Music since 1990. He earned degrees from Indiana State, the University of Louisville and the University of North Texas. He teaches trombone, euphonium, brass quintet and performs with the Faculty Brass Quintet. He is also the principal trombone of the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra and the Danville (Ill.) Symphony Orchestra.

Krasnican is the director of the accompanying program at Indiana State. She graduated with distinction from the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with Brooks Smith, Barry Snyder and Frank Glazer. After completing her master's degree at Eastman, she also worked with John Wustman of the University of Illinois and Menahem Pressler of the Beaux Arts Trio.

As a collaborative artist, Krasnican has worked with major performers across North America and Europe, including engagements with the Western Horn Symposium and several World Saxophone Congresses. She has performed as soloist in the Piano Concerto by Vincent Persichetti with the Indiana State University Symphony Orchestra under the direction of the composer. She has also performed as a soloist with the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, premiering two piano concertos written for her by her husband, Daniel Powers.

In 2005, Krasnican was featured on the album "Spring and Fall," a compilation of Powers' chamber works and songs. In February 2007, she performed the complete works of Beethoven for cello and piano with cellist Kurt Fowler. She frequently performs in a piano duo with Beverley Simms, and they are both members of the piano/percussion ensemble Cramped Spaces.

Gallagher earned a B.S. degree in music and an M.M. degree in double bass performance from Indiana State. A native of Illinois, he currently performs with Danville, Champaign-Urbana, Lafayette and Eastern Illinois Symphonies.

Gallagher is also active as a freelance jazz and commercial bassist on both electric and upright bass. He has studied with David Murray, Donovan Stokes, Todd Coolman and Rufus Reid. He has mentored bass for more than 20 years as an adjunct in higher education and in his private studio.
