The Indiana State University School of Music will present a fall Choral Showcase concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday Oct. 9 in the University Hall Theater.
The concert will feature three Indiana State choral ensembles. The Concert Choir, under the direction of Scott Buchanan, will perform a diverse program of exciting repertoire that is both sacred and secular in nature. Composers include Shawn Kerchner, André van der Merwe, Dan Forrest, Darmon Meador, Ola Gjeilo, Andy Beck and John Washburn. Angela Scherer will serve as the accompanist.
"This is going to be an exciting program, from the standpoint of diversity," said Buchanan. "The audience will hear a movement from Ola Gjeilo's ‘Sunrise Mass,' along with traditional folksongs from Kenya, Japan, South Africa and North America. There is even a rousing musical arrangement of Aesop's great fable, ‘The Tortoise and the Hare.' The students have truly enjoyed working on this music. This fall program is being presented three to four weeks earlier than in the past, so they have had to really learn at an accelerated rate."
The Women's Choir will also offer a diverse program including works by Antonin Dvorak, Allen Koepke, Greg Gilpin and Susan Brumfield.
"We have worked diligently to recruit talented young ladies into the Women's Choir," said conductor Colleen Davis. "The group has nearly 50 singers this semester, which is more than double what it has been in the past. I think folks that attend our concerts on a regular basis will be delighted with the sound."
Andrea Marlowe will serve as the accompanist.
The Sycamore Singers will open the concert with a set of tunes from the musical theater genre.
"You really can't go wrong when you program music from Broadway shows," said Buchanan. "The music has been incredibly popular for decades, and the scores have terrific audience appeal."
The set will include You're the Top ("Anything Goes"), What I Did for Love ("A Chorus Line"), The Lady is a Tramp ("Babes in Arms"), One Hand, One Heart ("West Side Story") and Fascinating Rhythm ("Lady Be Good"). Buchanan also conducts the Sycamore Singers, and Angela Scherer is their accompanist.
University Hall Theater is located in the Bayh College of Education building. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call 812-237-4590.
