University awarded continued funding for Student Support Services

August 4, 2015

Indiana State University has been awarded $320,477 in federal funding to serve low-income, first-generation and disabled students during the 2015-16 school year.

The U.S. Department of Education Awards the funds in five-year cycles to finance initiatives that help students stay in college and graduate and/or assist them in transferring from a two-year college. Indiana State anticipates receiving up to $2 million through 2020.

"This is among the largest grants to a single institution in Indiana this funding cycle," said Josh Powers, associate vice president for student success. "At the helm of this effort, and to whom ISU's success over the years in receiving this grant is largely due, is Dr. Rita Worrall, director of Student Support Services in the Center for Student Success. She, and her superb colleague, Debbie Huckabee, work tirelessly to lead important activities in these areas. Their work with students with disabilities in particular is to a considerable degree made possible through this grant resource."

Indiana State has participated in the national program since 1971. About 53 percent of the university's 11,000 undergraduates meet the requirements for Student Support Services assistance. The program provides academic services to eligible students to increase retention and graduation.

"We submitted our proposal last fall as part of a national competition of higher education institutions and are proud to once again receive funding," said Worrall. "This program has helped about 6,800 students during the past 44 years. With a college degree now required in so many occupations, our services may be more important than ever."

In addition to Huckabee, disability services coordinator, Worrall credited Tom Weller, writing specialist, JoEllen Ornduff, academic advisor/counslor, and Jacqueline Heighton, administrative assistant, for the program's success.
