Valentina French, associate professor of physics at Indiana State University, received the Caleb Mills Distinguished Teaching Award Wednesday during the university's annual Faculty Recognition Banquet.

Named for a 19th century educator who helped to shape Indiana's public education system and served as the state's second superintendent of public instruction, the Mills Award recognizes Indiana State's most distinguished teachers.

"I am truly honored to receive the Caleb Mills Distinguished Teaching Award," French said. "I am grateful to the many students I have had over the years who made teaching a rewarding experience. It has been a real joy to share my passion for physics and to contribute to the intellectual development of my students."

French joined Indiana State's physics faculty in 1993 and teaches a wide range of physics courses, from algebra-based and calculus-based general physics to classical electrodynamics, quantum mechanics and advanced physics laboratory and serves as academic advisor to all physics majors.

She received a Ph.D. in physics in 1992 and a master's in 1987 from Oklahoma State University.
