Banks named student affairs VP at Indiana State

March 16, 2015

Willie L. Banks Jr. has been named vice president for student affairs at Indiana State University, Indiana State President Dan Bradley announced today.

"I am pleased to have Dr. Willie Banks join our leadership team," Bradley said. "He brings significant experience in student affairs and will help advance our strategic goals related to student engagement and success. His expertise in diversity-related issues will also be tremendously beneficial as we work to implement the results of our climate study and create an environment of inclusive excellence."

Banks comes to Indiana State from Cleveland State University, where he is interim assistant vice president for student affairs. He has also served Cleveland State as associate dean of students for student life and as interim vice president for student affairs and dean of students. From 1993-2010, he held a variety of student affairs positons at the University of Georgia, including associate dean and director of intercultural affairs.

"I am deeply humbled and excited to be joining the Indiana State University community," Banks said. "During my visit, I was impressed with the level of engagement and care displayed by the students, faculty and staff. I am thrilled to start this next chapter of my career at Indiana State and to become a Sycamore."

Early in the search process, Banks surfaced as a leading contender from a pool of 57 candidates, said John Beacon, vice president for enrollment management, marketing and communications and chair of the student affairs search committee.

"Willie brings to the position the experience, personality, and leadership traits for which the search committee was looking," Beacon said.

Banks holds a Bachelor of Arts in public relations, with a minor in business, from Mercer University. He also earned two degrees from the University of Georgia: a master's in student personnel and a Ph.D. in student affairs administration.

He is a three-time recipient of the University of Georgia Student Affairs Outstanding Collaborative and Teamwork Award, has been named Southeast Region Outstanding Campus Activities Professional by the National Association for Campus Activities and has served on the board of directors for the Association of College Unions International.

Banks will begin his duties at Indiana State on May 15, succeeding Carmen Taylor Tillery, who left the position last year after being named vice president for student affairs at Long Beach State University in California. Nolan Davis has served as interim vice president since July.
