Community School of the Arts Spring 2015 programming announced

The Indiana State University Community School of the Arts provides the communities of the Wabash Valley and surrounding areas the opportunity to participate in non-credit classes in dance, music, theater, visual art and private music lessons. We welcome students of all ages, backgrounds and ability levels to experience professional and affordable instruction in the performing and fine arts.

The public can park on any Indiana State student or faculty and staff lots 5 p.m.-7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday and any time on weekends, at no charge. For classes or lessons offered during the day, Monday through Friday, CSA students may purchase parking passes at $1 for the duration of one class. Please call the CSA office for details.

PRIVATE MUSIC LESSONS FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS

There is a one-time per year private music lesson membership fee of $25/individual or $40/family. This fee allows you to sign up for as many lessons and classes as you wish, during the fall, spring and summer semesters. This covers the period of Aug. 18, 2014 to Aug.17, 2015. Members receive a 10 percent discount on classes. Indiana State employees, students and OLLI members receive CSA members' prices without paying the membership fee. There are no discounts on fees for private music lessons or the Terre Haute Children's Choir.

The Community School of the Arts, the Center for Global Engagement, the Department of Theater and the School of Music have collaborated to offer this class free to teens and adults, ages 16 and up. Designed for individuals at any experience level, this class will teach students the basics of African dance and drumming. Students will dance and drum together while discovering the origins of songs, diverse tribes and the African continent and culture. Students who are interested and available may be invited to appear in an Indiana State student production of "Miss Julie" in March. Please call the CSA office to register at 812-237-2528.

Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest dance forms of India. A popular and widely performed dance style, it is practiced by male and female dancers all over India. Due to its wide range of movements and postures and the balanced mélange of the rhythmic and mimetic aspects, it lends itself well to experimental and fusion choreography. In this introductory Bharatanatyam class, different body movements, rhythmic patterns, leg movements, hand gestures and facial expression will be taught. A brief introduction of Bharatanatyam theory will also be provided. Please call the CSA office to register at 812-237-2528.

Designed for adults, 25 years of age and up, this class is for individuals with little or no musical background that want to learn to read music, play an instrument, and join others who are taking the same steps. As a member of the Community School of the Arts' New Horizons Band, you will meet new friends and work with them as a team to learn music for concerts and other performances in the community. New Horizons ensembles typically perform many times each year in venues ranging from formal concerts to parks and other community locations. The CSA offers an easy and affordable rent-to-own instrument program. There is no long-term obligation so you can rent your instrument until you own it, or until you return it; it is up to you. Contact the CSA office for further details.

Information day is 6 p.m. Dec. 15 for newcomers thinking about joining the band. The regularly scheduled New Horizons class will be open for observation. Norm Hanson, director of New Horizons, will be available to answer questions. Instruments will be on display for you to try. African Drumming for Adults

Come learn how to play three or four song styles from West Africa on a variety of African drums and hand-held percussion instruments. Conceived as a fun and low-pressure class, sessions will focus on group drumming, rhythmic organization, playing techniques and musical expression. Designed for a range of abilities, previous experience with percussion or music reading is welcome but not required nor necessary. Music is taught within an oral tradition that utilizes direct demonstration and visual/aural cues, calling upon the student to merely listen, imitate and gradually progress, eventually learning to attune with the group. Musical selections represent a rich caldron of African cultural traditions where people use drum ensembles for ceremonial activities, civic occasions and recreational/social events. Instruments are provided.

Have you ever wondered about the secret to drawing portraits? This course will cover the fundamentals of mapping and refining the proportions of the human face. While the goal is to capture a likeness of the face, students will experiment with elements such as composition, light and shadow, value and line. Participants will render textures, explore shading methods and learn how to draw different views of the head. Students will work in graphite and charcoal using white and colored paper. Emphasis will be on gaining an understanding and appreciation of portraits and increasing the power of observation. As part of the journey into portraiture, students will look at books that emphasize good techniques and study the work of well-known portrait artists. Participants will be working from mirrors and photographs. Please go to the website for a supply list.

 

Metal Sculpture

This class is for beginning to intermediate level students. No prior sculpture or welding experience is necessary. The emphasis of this class is the exploration of three-dimensional form. Students will learn how monumental sculpture is produced through the creation of small-scale models, also called "maquettes." Students will be introduced to the fundamental techniques of welding, cutting, grinding and shaping of steel to produce works of art. Most tools and equipment will be provided. Photoshop Elements 12 is used to teach this class. It is recommended, but not mandatory, to have Photoshop Elements 10, 11 or 12 installed on a laptop computer that can be brought to class. Students without laptops have access to lab computers with the full version of Photoshop.

This class allows participants to gain further photo-editing experience including learning advanced exposure adjustments, in-depth retouching, use of layers, and adding text to images. Using Photoshop Elements to create photo collages, students learn creative actions to apply to photographs. Participants must have basic photo editing skills, including importing and saving photos, color correction, cropping and rotating and making basic selections.

Adobe InDesign 6 is used to teach this class. It is recommended, but not mandatory, to have Photoshop and InDesign installed on a computer that can be brought to class. Students without laptops have access to lab computers with Photoshop and InDesign. Basic knowledge of Photoshop is desirable but not mandatory. Students will learn the basics of InDesign including how to create multi-page documents, use master pages, basic typesetting, formatting and page layout. One class will teach participants the basics of Photoshop; how to manipulate and prepare images and place them in InDesign. Lots of time will be devoted to hands-on experience.

The goal of this class is to teach students the fundamentals of working with clay as an artistic medium. According to their own ideas, students will use methods on and off the wheel to create and design vessels/sculptures that express individuality. Students will work with hand building techniques such as coil building, slab building and mold making, all of which can be used in combination with wheel thrown forms. Each student will be supplied with 50 pounds of clay. Additional clay and potter's tool kits will be available for purchase. A $20 lab fee is included in the class fee. This fee covers materials including glazes and slips for cone 10, wax resist, brushes, bisque and reduction firings. Additional studio time will be available to students at the discretion of the instructor.

Recycle Mania: From Trash to Treasure!

Instructors: Taylor Valandingham (ages 5-8) and Sarah Cole (ages 9-12)

In collaboration with the Indiana State Recycle Center, Art Spaces, and the Watermark Artists' Collective, this class explores creating art with recycled materials. Recycle Mania: From Trash to Treasure! allows children to learn the value of discarded materials and how to incorporate them into 2- and 3-dimensional works of art, meet the artists in the Watermark Collective and exhibit their artwork during the Watermark project dedication. Students will discover how Watermark, a collective of regional artists, is creating an installation to celebrate the Indiana State Recycle Center's 25th anniversary. This installation, scheduled for completion in April 2015, will become part of Art Spaces' outdoor sculpture collection.

In class at the Recycle Center, students will be given a tour of the facilities to learn how trash is recycled, followed by hands-on repurposed art workshops. The remaining classes will be held in the Fine Arts Building's art room, where teachers will prepare new projects every week, incorporating recycled materials. On April 22, Earth Day, students will have a final exhibition of their work alongside the Watermark project, during the installation dedication. The Watermark dedication and children's exhibition are out-of-doors. Although the children's artwork will be displayed under a tent, the event is subject to change due to adverse weather conditions.

The class culminates with an on-campus walking tour of the Art Spaces' sculpture collection. The THCC offers three different choirs to accommodate the singing experience of every child. Children may progress to the more advanced choirs through bi-annual auditions. "Sing Up!" (ages 7 and older) is a choir intended for younger children who have little formal training or performance experience. With the help of soon-to-be Indiana State choral education majors, the THCC fills each week with games, songs and vocal exercises. "Lyric Choir" (ages 9 and older) is an intermediate choir. In this choir, singers learn basic vocal production, singing in-tune, how to follow along in their music, and how to blend with other singers to achieve a beautiful unison sound. In "Treble Choir" (ages 9 and older), singers build on vocal technique and blending. They learn to harmonize through the use of two and three part music. Greater sight-singing skills are utilized.

 

THE TERRE HAUTE GUITAR CLUB

The Community School of the Arts' Terre Haute Guitar Club offers unique learning experiences for adults, teens and children ages 6 and up. Our teachers -- extraordinary guitarists and players themselves -- lead this program using a fun, multi-layered and accessible approach to learning guitar through guitar classes and lessons. Guitar Club students are placed in age-appropriate labs that meet throughout the week. As students progress through the program, they learn to develop technical skills on the guitar while learning to understand and properly apply musical concepts. Students are given the opportunity to learn songs, all while building a connection with rhythmic, melodic and harmonic ideas. As students gain more confidence in and dedication to their practice, they are able to take one-on-one lessons with one of our trained instructors. All Guitar Club students are given opportunities to perform with their peers during various recitals and community public performances. The Terre Haute Guitar Club is for beginning to intermediate levels, offering an opportunity for students to learn to play the guitar and create music while working with a group of peers. During this 75-minute class, students will work on guitar techniques and musical concepts through engaging games and activities. Students will have the opportunity to participate in a final recital near the end of the semester. Guitars will be supplied to students in-class only. Students must have their own guitars at home to practice in-between classes. Rental guitars are available for the duration of the semester, please contact office for further details.

Rock Band! provides a fun and educational opportunity for teens at any experience level to explore ensemble playing with an emphasis placed on rock music. In Rock Band!, students will develop critical ensemble playing and rehearsal skills by learning to read lead sheets, improvising on their instrument and developing music reading skills. Students will explore different musical qualities of various rock styles while playing one or more of five traditional rock instruments: guitar, drums, bass, keyboards or voice. This course is designed to be hands-on, fun, and educational by challenging students to learn, analyze, and perform popular rock songs. Maximum enrollment is seven; CSA will accept registration on a first-come, first-served basis.

Raku Workshop

Ages: 14 and up

Raku is a specialized, low-firing process. This workshop allows participants to experience hand building and wheel throwing techniques that work well with the raku process. Students will experience the excitement of the fast firing that produces metallic lusters and crackling, distinctive to raku. All clay, glaze and firing costs are included in the class fee. Participants are required to bring their own potter's tools. A beginner's tool set may be purchased on the first day of class for $15.95. For all experience levels.

 

Build a Valentine's Day Monster!

This workshop is for kids, parents or the whole family. Monsters can be vampires, witches, ghosts and mummies but some are loveable, too! On Jan. 31, students build clay fantasy monsters that slink and crawl in their imagination! After the clay monsters have dried fully and are fired, students return on Valentine's Day to paint their monsters with acrylics and take them home. All materials included in price.

 

Acrylic Painting for Beginners

Ages: 16 and up

Workshop A: Introduction to Acrylics

Join us for this afternoon workshop to learn the basics of mixing, blending, and applying acrylic paint while creating a Modernist inspired artwork. This workshop is for the artist who is interested in learning techniques, tools and color theory. These basic skills will guide painters in future art-making endeavors. Workshop B: Acrylic Painting: PortraitureDates & Time: Feb. 21, 2-5 p.m. This workshop will introduce participants to portrait painting skills. Students will use acrylic paints and paintbrushes as their primary tools for creating realistic portraits. Come prepared with two copies of a high-quality color photograph.

Workshop C: Acrylic Painting: Landscapes

This workshop is for participants that are eager to explore the world of landscape painting. Using a variety of mixing and blending techniques, students will create an original painting in just one afternoon!

FUSION is a performing arts after-school program that works with middle school students to develop a show that will be performed on the last day of class. FUSION explores dance and text using students' imaginations and creativity to create a unique theatrical experience. Indiana State theater and dance students and a faculty member conduct the program. A final performance will be held at West Vigo Middle School and at the New Theater on the Indiana State campus. Children from any area middle schools are welcome to attend; transportation is the responsibility of the caregiver. Maximum enrollment is 20 students, and registration will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Children participating in FUSION are required to attend classes, from start to finish, as the success of the program is dependent on the group as a whole. All materials are supplied.

African Drumming is an interactive music class for young people focusing on the basics of rhythm, pulse, and musical creativity while promoting social cohesion and self-esteem. Students will learn to play a variety of percussion instruments from Africa, including drums, wood blocks, shakers, bells and recycled materials. The music lessons will also include African songs, dances, and games. Reading music is not required and beginners are welcome! Children from any area middle schools are welcome to attend; transportation is the responsibility of the care giver. Maximum enrollment is 20 students and registration will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. Children participating in African Drumming are required to attend classes, from start to finish, as the success of the program is dependent on the group as a whole. All materials, including drums, are supplied.
