Physician assistant students provide bone screening during Osteoporosis Month

May 8, 2014

May is Osteoporosis Awareness Month. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 52 million Americans have osteoporosis (thinning of the bone). In fact, about one in two women and up to one in four men over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. By 2020, half of all Americans over age 50 are expected to have low bone density or osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis increases the risk for bone fractures. The gold standard for osteoporosis diagnosis is a low-density x-ray scan. Portable ultrasonic bone scanners allow low-cost, fast screening for risk of osteoporosis.

Indiana State University's College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services is happy to announce a community service activity at Honey Creek Mall.

Physician Assistant students will be performing free bone scans to determine your risk of osteoporosis and provide simple suggestions to improve your bone health and thus reduce your risk of bone fracture. This service will be provided inside the mall's main entrance during mall hours May 10-11 and May 17-18.
