Nathan Schaumleffel has received the 2014 Faculty Distinguished Service Award from Indiana State University's Center for Community Engagement.

Schaumleffel is an associate professor in the department of kinesiology, recreation and sport and executive director of Indiana State's Nonprofit Leadership Alliance Certification Program.

Under his leadership, the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance program received the 2013 Sprint Campus Partner of the Year Award. The program was also named Indiana State's Most Outstanding Student Organization for the 2008-09 school year.

As a parent of a child with autism, Schaumleffel is heavily involved in Autism Speaks. He co-wrote a book titled "Leading the Way: Autism-Friendly Youth Organizations" with Indiana State undergraduate student Andrew Bowman and several other autism advocates from around the country. He also serves as the Autism Speaks U faculty advisor at ISU.

Schaumleffel has also created many service-learning opportunities for his students to connect with nonprofit and governmental organizations throughout the Wabash Valley, including Boy Scouts of America, Vigo County YMCA, Special Olympics Indiana, Happiness Bag, Goodwill, Indiana Park and Recreation Association, Indiana YouthPRO Association, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and Friends of Shakamak State Park.

He served on the faculty affairs committees for the College of Nursing, Health and Human Services and the departments of kinesiology, recreation and sport and social work. He has also chaired the college's student affairs committee, has served as senior faculty fellow for Indiana Campus Compact and faculty fellow and development associate for the Indiana State University Foundation.

Schaumleffel has mentored and taught numerous students who have won the university President's Award for Civic and Community Leadership and the Hines Medal for the highest grade point average while pursuing a bachelor's degree, as well as the Rankin Medal, which is given to students who have dedicated themselves to improving the university and the greater Terre Haute community. He currently mentors students as faculty advisor to the Nonprofit Leadership Student Association, the Association of Fundraising Professionals Collegiate Chapter, and Best Buddies ISU, and served as faculty advisor to the Larry Legend Foundation.

"I am humbled by this recognition," Schaumleffel said. "I take great pride in the service component to my professorship, the public and community service mission of Indiana State University, and the scholarship of engagement."

Schaumleffel has also been named the 2014 Recreation Alumnus of the Year at his alma mater, Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
