The Indiana State University School of Music will host a flute fair for students in grades 7-12 on Saturday, March 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Landini Center for Performing and Fine Arts, at Seventh and Chestnut streets.
The event, sponsored by Miyazawa Flutes, features British flutist Ian Clarke as well as exhibits by Paige's Music, a seminar in selecting the right flute, activities such as a play-along, a recital and a master class.Clarke, an International Miyazawa artist, is one of the leading players/composers in the flute world. His works are establishing themselves as some of the most exciting flute repertoire of today.
He has performed as guest soloist in numerous countries across the world from the U.S.A. to his native Britain and has given master classes at many top music schools. In his career he has performed in genres ranging from classical opera to a guest appearance with rock group Jethro Tull/Ian Anderson. His acclaimed CD ‘Within' is one of the flute world's best sellers and his latest CD Deep Blue reached the top 10 in the UK Classical Artist Chart; thought to be a first for an album of original flute music.
Clarke graduated with honors in mathematics from Imperial College in London and concurrently studied flute part-time at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama where he was a prize winning student and is now professor of flute. He collaborates with Simon Painter producing film and television music under the name of Diva Music.
The recital, scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m., features Clarke, accompanied by ISU faculty member Martha Krasnican. The recital is free and open to the public.
Students in grades 7-12 can attend the day-long fair for a $10 pre-registration fee through March 26. Parents and teachers are invited to attend free of charge.
