Indiana State University's 2013 Homecoming will celebrate the university's past, present and future while honoring a retiring administrator.
Homecoming weekend will kick off with the 51st running of the Sycamore Tricycle Derby beginning at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct 4. The teams, who will compete in two separate races, reflect campus life - sororities, fraternities, residence halls and student organizations. This year's race is dedicated to the memory of Johnny Shipman, who flagged trike and tandem races along with his family for 50 years.
Activities ramp up on Saturday, Oct. 5, beginning with the 97th annual Blue and White Parade at 9 a.m., led by Grand Parade Marshal C. Jack Maynard.
Maynard, who had served as provost and vice president of Academic Affairs since 2003 and as dean of the College of Education from 2001-2003, retired June 30.
During his 10-year tenure as provost, he was instrumental in changing the schools within the University to colleges; the implementation of the laptop campus concept; the advancement of the Rural Health Initiative; the adoption of a new foundational studies program; the expansion/redesign of the University Honors Program; the development of several new academic majors and the realignment of academic programs. One of his most notable accomplishments as provost has been the development, implementation and on-going support of experiential learning and community engagement.
The parade will begin at Ninth Street and Wabash Avenue, traveling down Wabash to Fifth Street and finishing up on campus.
Following the parade, the festivities continue at Memorial Stadium with Tent City, featuring live entertainment. Homecoming wouldn't be complete without football -- Indiana State will host Youngstown State beginning at 3:05 p.m.
