Eubank representing Indiana State at Miss Indiana

June 17, 2013

The past couple of months have been a whirlwind for Indiana State University student Kyla Eubank.

Since being crowned Miss ISU in October, the 21-year-old Paoli senior has served as an ambassador for the university, balancing studying and her involvement in campus activities while preparing for the biggest competition of her life - representing Indiana State at the Miss Indiana competition.

"To be chosen to represent ISU at Miss Indiana is a dream," Eubank said. "And I truly appreciate that."

But it has been a lot of hard work for the textiles and apparel merchandising major.

"I've been doing a lot of preparation," Eubank said. "It has ranged from selecting the gowns and swimsuit I'll wear to honing my interview skills, working out with a personal trainer and practicing the piano."

Eubank will perform "Clocks" by Coldplay for the talent portion of the competition. It was a talent she picked up after a long absence.

"When I was little, I begged my mom for piano lessons," she said. "I quit a couple of times. I decided I wanted to pick it back up last year."

Eubank performed Beethoven's "Fur Elise" in capturing the Miss ISU crown. But she wanted something more contemporary for Miss Indiana.

"I chose "Clocks", because I can feel the emotion and passion that was put into it," she explained.

As Miss ISU, Eubank has also interacted and fundraised for the Children's Miracle Network and has raised awareness of her personal platform "Educating future generations to reach their greatest world."

"It's more than academics," she said. "It's about self esteem and accepting differences. We need to accept everyone's differences and enjoy the beauty of that."

She took her platform into the community by performing two programs for young girls. Her first program, for 12 first-grade Girl Scouts, focused on diversity by giving them free reign to decorate straw hats and a few other activities.

"At the end of the program, I pointed out to the girls that, although each hat was very different, they were all beautiful and unique," Eubank said. "I explained this was how they should view themselves and the world around them."

Her second program focused on self-esteem and "true beauty."

"I had four girls who I walked through a makeup lesson on how to use makeup to enhance their natural beauty, not use it to cover up themselves," the self-proclaimed fashion maven explained.

"We also listed five things that we like about ourselves," Eubank said, adding each of the girls taped a piece of paper to their backs and went around the room writing compliments to one another.

The group ended the program by doing something nice for others.

"We did a service project, where the girls and I assembled birthday kits for Bethany House," she said. "The kits included cake mix, icing, sprinkles, candles, streamers, banners, and some small toys for children and families who may not have the means to have a birthday celebration."

Freda Luers, co-director of the Miss ISU Scholarship Program, said Eubank embraced the duties and responsibilities associated with the crown and has served as a role model.

"Kyla has represented Indiana State very well, not only on campus but out in the community," Luers said. "She embodies the ideal Sycamore."

The Miss Indiana Scholarship Pageant will take place June 19-22 at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center. Eubank will compete against 31 other women in interview, fitness, talent and evening gown competitions.
