After collecting hundreds of hygiene and wellness items during the spring semester, the Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Honor Society donated those items to the Vigo County Juvenile Group Home.
Jordan Isaacs, president of Alpha Phi Sigma, said the Vigo County Juvenile Center contacted the organization, re-chartered in the fall of 2011, in the fall about its need for items.
"Every semester Alpha Phi Sigma pairs up with a criminal justice agency and does some form of community service pertaining to the specific needs of that organization," Isaacs said.
The goals of Alpha Phi Sigma are to promote academic excellence, community service and educational leadership.
"We focus on philanthropic projects to build a stronger community, promote leadership among our members and establish ties between the university and the community," Isaacs said. "It is imperative as young leaders that we are actively involved in service-based projects. By being involved, we hope to make a positive contribution to the Wabash Valley."
Group members collected hundreds of toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, tissues, school supplies and other hygiene items.
"We received an outpouring of donations from local dentist offices, local hair salons, criminology students, as well as private individuals," Isaacs said.
Organization members took the items to the juvenile center on April 15. Alpha Phi Sigma is a national criminology/criminal justice honor society.
