Indiana State University and the Vigo County School Corporation and have been awarded a one-year, $360,000 Innovation Grant from the Indiana Department of Education.

This grant will allow the university to provide Terre Haute North Vigo, Terre Haute South Vigo and West Vigo high schools with more dual credit opportunities for high school students.

"Dual credit is an excellent and affordable way for high school students to earn college credit that will count towards a degree and to experience college-level coursework while still in the supportive, familiar environment of their high school," said Susan Powers, Indiana State's associate vice president of academic affairs. "Additionally, students who bring with them to the university these dual credit courses may find that they have more flexibility to explore different fields of study and still be able to graduate in four years."

Indiana State currently provides a variety of dual credit courses to the three high schools in Vigo County, but Powers said one of the goals of the grant is to create more equity among what is offered to the high schools.

"We also hope to expand the range of offerings into more areas of our foundational studies and possibly explore if there are introductory major courses in some fields that could possibly work for all parties," Powers said.

Indiana State faculty will work alongside high school teachers in delivering the dual credit courses. The university and school corporation also plan to work together to assist high school teachers in becoming credentialed as dual credit instructors.
