An Indiana State University student who demonstrated an extensive commitment to campus and community service is the 2012 recipient of the university's President's Medal for Leadership, Scholarship and Service.
The university will recognize Mary Francis of Hammond as this year's President's Medal recipient during spring commencement on May 5.
Francis, who is completing a bachelor's degree in psychology, served as secretary of the Psi Chi international honor society in psychology and is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa. She has been involved in ISU's Student Government Association and has served as a resident hall assistant and community assistant for the Office of Residential Life. She was co-founder of the university's Student African-American Sisterhood and served as its president. She has also been a co-host and chairperson for "Bless the Mic," a regular event at the university's African-American Cultural Center that provides students the opportunity to sing, read poems, perform skits or otherwise express themselves.
Her community activities have included the Booker T. Washington Center Workshop - Martin Luther King, Jr., Day program; tutoring at-risk seventh and eighth grade students at Terre Haute's Sarah Scott Middle School, Planned Parenthood; FreeBirds Solution Center; and Building America's Dream with Indianapolis Public Schools, a program in which she served as a mentor for elementary, middle, and high school students.
Francis' additional awards include the Senior Leadership Award; Step-Up facilitator; Focus Indiana Scholarship; Academic Achievement Award; Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society; and a study abroad scholarship to London. She is a Ronald E. McNair Scholar and a 21st Century Scholar.
Francis will be recognized during Indiana State's spring commencement May 5 at Hulman Center.
A graduate of Gavit High School, she is the daughter of Marvin Francis and the late Rita Francis. She plans to enroll this fall in the Master of Science program in clinical mental health counseling at Auburn University.
