Susan Powers has been selected to serve as associate vice president for academic affairs at Indiana State University, Jack Maynard, ISU's provost and vice president for academic affairs, announced today.
A faculty member in Indiana State's Bayh College of Education since 1995, Powers has served as associate dean of the college for the past five years. She was previously a professor in the department of curriculum, instruction and media technology.
"Dr. Powers is a passionate and effective educator and a strong leader. She has helped the Bayh College of Education build on its already outstanding reputation for preparing teachers and school administrators," Maynard said. "She has also played a key role in many university-wide initiatives, including serving as co-coordinator of the recent accreditation self-study. We are fortunate to have a colleague such as Susan who is already respected throughout the university to work with all of our colleges in ensuring that our academic programs remain and provide students the education and experience they need."
Powers said she is excited about being named to the position, a move she described as "a great transition" from the work she had done in the Bayh College and as chair of the accreditation self-study. She will assume her new duties July 1, succeeding Robert English, who is returning to the College of Technology to serve as associate dean.
"I look forward to building upon the excellent work of Dr. Bob English and the collaboration with everyone in Academic Affairs," she said. "It became clear through those I spoke with during the interview process that there are many individuals committed to ISU's continual improvement and student success and I look forward to the opportunity to facilitate our curricular process and the continued growth and development of the faculty."
Alberta Comer, dean of Cunningham Memorial Library at ISU and chair of the associate vice president search committee, said Powers is up to meeting the challenges of the position.
"We are delighted that Susan Powers has accepted the associate vice president position and are confident she is ready for this next level of service to Indiana State University," Comer said.
Powers holds a bachelor's degree in marketing and a master's degree in college student personnel administration from Indiana University as well as a Doctor of Education in instructional technology from the University of Virginia. She is co-author of a textbook on technology and teacher education and has frequently served as a consultant and presenter on the topic throughout the country.
