Indiana State University students Justin Todd and Arvinjit Singh were recently recognized with the 2011 President's Award for Civic and Community Leadership.
The award is presented annually to a junior or senior who has made community service an integral part of their university experience. The awards were presented during the university's annual Community Engagement Recognition Banquet in Hulman Memorial Student Union.
Todd, a senior political science/legal studies major from Carlisle, has served as a learning community peer assistant for the past three years and has been active on campus as a member of College Republicans, Alpha Lambda Delta, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Golden Key. He has also served as a Student Court justice and Fall Welcome ambassador, where he introduced first-year students to campus. Todd's commitment to service and community engagement is strongly rooted in his participation with Donaghy Day, the Jane Addams Hull House service learning trip and the Take Back the Night rally and march. His political science studies have allowed him to participate in a service learning trip to Washington, D.C. and study abroad in China.
Singh, a senior pre-med major from Terre Haute, currently serves as a pharmacist assistant at St. Ann's Clinic through his service in AmeriCorps. At St. Ann's he logs in donations of medicine and vitamins, counts prescriptions and reads dosing instructions to patients. He has participated in the Indianapolis Day of Service, where he helped beautify Riverside Park alongside Special Olympics Indiana athletes and families. For the past two years, Singh has used his Spring Break to help others. In 2010, he traveled to Maryville, Tenn. in conjunction with Alternative Spring Break to assist the Cherokee Nation in service projects. This year, he traveled to Pensacola, Fla. to assist in cleanup following last summer's oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Also during the Recognition Banquet, Union Hospital received the university's Community Partner Award. St. Ann Clinic was recognized with the Outstanding Community Service Award.
