The Indiana State Biology speaker series will focus on ‘Women in Science' with its next two presentations.

On March 1, Danielle Greer from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College will discuss "A multi-scale perspective in ecology aids conservation planning for the endangered whooping crane."

The series will continue on March 15, with Jill Mateo from the University of Chicago coming to ISU to speak about "Behavioral, ecological and developmental correlates of stress in ground squirrels."

Both presentations will be held at 4 p.m. in Room 12 of the Science Building on campus. Staff, students, and members of the public are all invited to attend free of charge.

Greer's presentation will look at the benefits of using a multi-scale ecological approach of conserving whooping cranes. She will present scales of ecology that will provide information to aid in the recovery planning of the endangered whooping crane.

Currently serving as the ecologist at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Greer completed her PhD from Texas A&M University in the wildlife and fisheries sciences department.

Mateo's seminar on March 15 will focus on her research program which studies the adaptive behaviors of animals. The program studies how animals recognize their kin, and the types of anti-predator strategies that animals utilize. Her research focuses mainly on small mammals like the Belding ground squirrel, and seeks to understand how stress influences their learning of survival behaviors.

Mateo is currently an associate professor in the department of comparative human development at the University of Chicago. She received her doctorate in biopsychology with an emphasis in the evolution of animal behavior from the University of Michigan.

Following the Biology Speaker Series' ‘Women in Science' speakers, ISU will welcome its next speaker on March 29 as Robert McArthur from University of Missouri will present his lecture on "Vocal communication, sexual selection and speciation in frogs.
