‘Year of the Horn' featured at annual scholarship concert

The Indiana State University School of Music will host its 20th annual Scholarship Concert Sunday (Feb. 20) at 4 p.m. in Tilson Auditorium. Performances will begin at 4 p.m.

The concert's theme is ‘Year of the Horn' and will feature horn player Kazimierz Machala.

Machala was born in Poland and was appointed principal horn with the Kracow Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1973. He then studied at Julliard, becoming the school's first horn player to earn the degree of doctor of musical arts.

In 1979, Machala was appointed to the position of principal horn with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and was a member of the Australian Wind Virtuosi for seven years. Back in the United States, he taught at the University of Georgia for three years.

Brian Kilp, an associate professor of music at Indiana State, will also be performing. Kilp is currently principal horn with the Sinfonia da Camera in Champaign, Ill. He has toured both Beijing and Shanghai. He is also Principal Horn with the Danville Symphony and the Terre Haute Symphony.

Kilp is a freelance hornist in the Indianapolis region and has performed with numerous bands and ensembles.

The Scholarship Concert will also include performances by the ISU Wind Orchestra and Symphonic Band.

Student tickets cost $5, and adult tickets are $15. Patron tickets are also available for $40, which include admission to the post-concert artist reception. To reserve a patron ticket, call 812-237-2750.
