Make plans to attend Sycamore Hoopla Feb. 12

February 7, 2011

Indiana State University's Hulman Center will have something for everyone in the family Saturday (Feb. 12) during the fifth annual Sycamore Hoopla, a fun-filled day of exciting basketball and a whole lot more.

Terre Haute will host the third annual Polar Plunge, a fundraiser for Special Olympics Indiana, on Hulman Center's south patio in conjunction. Walk-up registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with plunging beginning at 9:30 a.m. Clabber Girl will have their concession trailer out on the patio, selling REX coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits and gravy to keep you warm, with a portion of the proceeds going to Special Olympics.

Mayor Duke Bennett and Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing will be among those taking a dip in the pool along with members of the ISU football and women's soccer teams, members of the ISU Public Safety department, the ladies of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority and the men of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Awards are given for the best costume, most money raised by an individual, most money raised by a team and a special Campus Challenge award for the largest campus group of plungers. Participants must raise a "bear" minimum of $75 to plunge ($50 minimum for students with a student ID). All proceeds will benefit Special Olympics athletes in your community, giving them the opportunity to train locally and compete at the state level in a variety of Olympic-type sports. Even if you're not willing to brave the waters, come out and cheer those who are!

The Terre Haute Plunge is sponsored by Hulman Center, Indiana State University, Clabber Girl, First Financial Bank, Complete Outdoor, ARC of Vigo County/BLN, ResCare, Sodexo, ServPro, Pepsi, The Corner Grind and WTWO.

Following the plunge, get ready for an afternoon of basketball. The ISU men, coached by Greg Lansing, tip off at 1 p.m. against the Drake Bulldogs while Teri Moren's squad go up against the Wichita State Shockers at 3:30 p.m.

Come early and check out Hulman Center's enormous windows, decorated by campus organizations, residence halls, offices and departments. Winners of the decorating contest will be announced during the women's game. Prior to the men's matchup with Drake, enjoy the entertainment provided by the Sycamore Basketball Band and the ISU Sparkettes.

Saturday is also Fan Appreciation Day. Free tickets are available for the day. One ticket will let you see both games. Tickets can be obtained from the Hulman Center Box Office. For more information, contact Hulman Center at 812-237-3737.
