Financial expert to discuss economic affairs in Merrillville

November 3, 2010

A renowned financial expert associated with Indiana State University will discuss economic affairs during an upcoming event in Northwest Indiana.

R. Christopher Whalen, who is a research fellow with Networks Financial Institute (NFI) at ISU, will give his speech, "A New Deal for the American Economy," on Monday, Nov. 8. Whalen's presentation in Merrillville is an outreach on behalf of NFI and the Scott College of Business at Indiana State University; he spoke on the ISU campus last month and will be in Evansville later this month.

Whalen's speech in Merrillville is sponsored by the Minas Sabau Group of City Securities Corp., a full service brokerage firm.

"The issues he will address at the symposium are not only very pertinent given the economic environment the country is in but also very valuable to business owners, young people and really anyone who finds interest in financial topics," said Randy Minas, financial adviser and senior vice president of the Minas Sabau Group. "They are the issues that will affect how we will run our businesses, how we will view our jobs and careers in the economy of the future, and even how we'll view our savings and investments as these issues begin to play out."

Whalen's speech will be held at the Star Plaza in Merrillville. A reception will be held from 4:30 to 5 p.m. before Whalen's presentation and discussion from 5 to 6 p.m.

The events are free, but pre-registration is required. Pre-registration is available until Friday by contacting Corrie Scaringe, event manager for NFI, at 800-607-7113, ext. 702, or corrie.scaringe@indstate.edu.

Whalen is the co-founder and managing director of Institutional Risk Analytics, and he has worked as an investment banker, research analyst and journalist for more than 20 years.

NFI is an institute within ISU's Scott College of Business. Founded in 2003 through a grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc., NFI strives to facilitate broad, collaborative thinking, dialogue and progress in the evolving financial services marketplace, focusing on the areas of education, outreach and research.
