Turman Art Gallery hosts student digital art exhibit

October 26, 2010

"Building Place," an art exhibit featuring digital artwork created by undergraduate students at Indiana State University, is on display in the Turman Art Gallery at ISU.

This exhibit, featuring works inspired by Gaston Bachelard's book "The Poetics of Space," includes video, sound art and installation.

Sala Wong, assistant professor of digital art at Indiana State University, instructed her students enrolled in the intermediate and advanced computer art classes to work around a common theme to produce individual pieces of art.

This semester, students read Bachelard's book and designed artwork in response to a chapter from the book.

"This gives my students experience with collaboration, an important part of the contemporary artistic practice," Wong said. "It also provides them with a venue for the creation of installation art words that combine digital techniques such as animation or video production with physical spaces and sculptural elements.

"Building Place" features the artwork of Amanda Hickey, Sean Kennedy, Austen Leake, Devon Lowery, Janine Phelps, Elise Roberts, Ruth Russell and William Saxhaug.

This exhibit will be on display until Nov. 5. The artists will be present at the opening reception on Thursday, Oct. 28 from 5 - 7 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.

"These projects also give my students opportunities to better understand their own work, as they must explain the art to gallery visitors during the opening receptions," Wong said. "Such artworks tend to be temporary in nature, so having a strong venue such as a gallery helps to add a concreteness and polish to the work."

The Turman Art Gallery is located on the ISU campus in the Fine Arts Building on Chestnut St. Gallery hours for this exhibition are Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. This exhibition is free and open to the public. For additional information call 812-841-2884.
