ISU presents Fall Choral Showcase on Oct. 22

October 13, 2010

The Indiana State University department of music will present a Fall Choral Showcase concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22, in the University Hall Theater in the Bayh College of Education.

The free concert will feature the Sycamore Singers, Women's Chorale and ISU Concert Choir.

"This program will be quite diverse in nature", said Scott Buchanan, director of choral activities. "There are many different styles of music on this concert. I am also very pleased that we are able to offer the audience a brief preview of a work by Gabriela Lena Frank, the featured composer in our upcoming Contemporary Music Festival."

The Contemporary Music Festival runs Oct. 27-29. Frank's piece, "Ccollanan María" (2004), not only displays a complex comprehension of modern harmony, but it also provides the listener with a Peruvian cultural experience from the Spanish text. Soloists include Anna Buck, Sarah Buck, Jason Fishburn, and Jason David.

The concert will begin with the Sycamore Singers, under the direction Buchanan and graduate assistant Jason Fishburn. The ensemble will perform selections by American composers Joseph Martin, Daniel Gawthrop, Tom Porter, Darmon Meader, and Mack Wilberg.

The Women's Chorale, directed by Mark Carlisle, will feature works by Patti Drennan, Vicki Tucker Courtney, Brian Lewis, and Laura Farnell. Andrea Marlowe will accompany.

The ISU Concert Choir, conducted by Buchanan, will conclude the program. In addition to the piece by Frank, works and arrangements by David Reznick, Randall Johnson, Lee Dengler, Jon Washburn, Joshua Shank, Stacy V. Gibbs will also be presented.
