A prominent financial industry expert is visiting Indiana State University to speak about economic issues affecting the nation.
R. Christopher Whalen, who is a research fellow with Networks Financial Institute (NFI) at ISU, will give a speech titled "A New Deal for the American Economy" on Wednesday, Oct. 13. In the presentation, Whalen is expected to discuss topics from his upcoming book due out in December, and describe some changes to monetary, fiscal and trade policy that he believes would help restore balance to the world economy.
Whalen has been regularly quoted by the media, and is an important source for financial news, said John Tatom, director of research for NFI.
Whalen has written several research papers for NFI, which are available on the institution's website. He also has discussed his research at previous presentations on campus, Tatom said. Whalen previously visited ISU in 2008 and 2009.
"As part of our research program at NFI, we arrange one or two seminars on campus for students, faculty and the community each semester," Tatom said, "and Chris has been very popular at those."
The event will be conducted in the Bayh College of Education University Hall Auditorium. A reception will be held at 4:30 p.m., with a presentation and discussion starting at 5 p.m. All events are free, but pre-registration is required. Pre-registration is available until Oct. 12 by contacting Corrie Scaringe, event manager for NFI, at 800-607-7113, ext. 720, or corrie.scaringe@indstate.edu.
Whalen is the co-founder and managing director of Institutional Risk Analytics, and he has worked as an investment banker, research analyst and journalist for more than 20 years.
