Fashion Design Showcase set for Oct. 17

September 24, 2010

The Psi Iota chapter of Beta Sigma Phi is hosting "Fashion Design Showcase" Oct. 17 at Indiana State University.

The event, sponsored by the College of Technology and the department of human resource development and performance technologies and co-sponsored by Arts Illiana, will take place in Tilson Auditorium at 2 p.m.

The host of the showcase, Anthony L. Williams, was a contestant on the seventh season of the television show "Project Runway." Williams, the only contestant to be fired twice in the same season of the show, designed the dress Heidi Klum wore on the April cover of Marie Claire magazine.

All designers are welcome to submit items. The deadline for submission of the entry form is Monday (Sept. 27).

"This is for the amateur, the professional, the independent that makes things but doesn't have anywhere to show them off," said Edie Wittenmyer, project coordinator and adjunct instructor of textiles, apparel and merchandising.

Through this fashion showcase, Beta Sigma Phi - an international women's social, cultural and service organization - hopes to generate interest in fashion in the Wabash Valley.

"Most people think you've got to go to New York or California for fashion like this, but we want to increase the excitement in the Midwest," Wittenmyer said.

With this event and the ISU Fashion Merchandising Association's annual fashion show, designers will be able to showcase their work on a more regular basis, Wittenmyer said.

VIP tickets are $25 for adults, $12.50 for children under 10, and include access to the vendor display at 12 p.m., a reception at 1 p.m. and premium seating for the showcase. Those with VIP tickets will have the opportunity to meet Williams.

All other tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 10 and include admittance to the vendor display at 1 p.m. and the fashion show at 2 p.m.

Proceeds of the showcase will benefit the Beta Sigma Phi scholarship fund and the Council on Domestic Abuse (CODA).
