Turman Art Gallery to host ‘Menagerie & Tetrahedrons’

September 21, 2010

The Turman Art Gallery at Indiana State University presents "Menagerie & Tetrahedrons," a printmaking and sculpture exhibition featuring art by David Erickson and Rod Bradfield.

The exhibition, featuring Erickson's two-dimensional prints and Bradfield's 3-dimensional sculptures, provides an opportunity for viewers to encounter adventurous vision and invention. Displayed in counterpoint, the artwork stirs imagination and arouses amused inquiry.

The exhibition is free and open to the public Sept. 20 - Oct. 13. The public is invited to attend the opening reception on Thursday, Sept. 23 from 4 - 6 p.m.

Professor emeritus of art at Indiana State, Erickson taught printmaking for more than three decades. He has pursued image-making throughout his lifetime, influenced by his origins from the Lakeland forests of Northern Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Superior.

His work often contains images of feathered entities, both obvious and implied. His interest in avian subject matter has led to a compilation of works utilizing a variety of printmaking techniques. Erickson's versatility and mastery of the medium has enabled him to create works of art that range from a 3 in. by 4 in. wood engraving to a 60-foot hanging installation.

Bradfield studied printmaking under Erickson while earning his undergraduate degree at ISU. He has been an art educator in Terre Haute for more than 30 years, serving as an art teacher and department chair at Terre Haute South Vigo High School for 24 years.

While teaching, Bradfield has maintained his career as an artist, using a variety of processes to create his art, including drawing, painting, sculpture and digital media.

In the featured exhibition, Bradfield combined clay and mixed media to construct shapes, employing a broad range of surface treatments, including carefully applied, hard-edge color and a free interaction of paint and glaze, creating accidental surface variations.

The Turman Art Gallery is located in the Fine Arts Building on ISU's campus. Gallery hours are Monday - Friday, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. For additional information, call 812-841-2884.
