Terri Ketzner, an insurance and risk management major in Indiana State University's Donald W. Scott College of Business, has completed a prestigious nine-week summer internship sponsored by the National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices (NAPSLO).

Ketzner served separate internships with XL Insurance in Exton, Penn., which provides property, casualty and specialty insurance products to industrial, commercial and professional firms, and Hull and Company (a division of Brown and Brown), a wholesale general insurance agent and broker in Tampa, Fla. Ketzner received a competitive salary from her host firms and NAPSLO provided a stipend, travel expenses and housing costs.

"Participating in the NAPSLO Internship Program allowed me to see two different aspects of the excess and surplus lines industry," said Ketzner, a senior from Ferdinand. "I feel fortunate to have been selected and have the opportunity to gain the hands-on experience in the industry."

During her internship experience, Ketzner learned all aspects of the surplus lines segment of the insurance industry. Surplus lines is a segment of the specialty insurance industry that provides coverage for risks that cannot be placed with standard insurance carriers. While surplus lines represent a small percentage of the commercial insurance market, it is important in the handling of unique, unusual or hard-to-place risks.

"We're very pleased to see Terri Ketzner selected for a NAPSLO internship," said Terrie Troxel, executive director of the Scott College's Gongaware Center, which helps students develop leadership in insurance and financial services. "She is the type of hardworking, dedicated, knowledgeable and inquisitive student being developed in our distinctive insurance and risk management program. She is a great representative of the students encouraged and supported in our Gongaware scholarship program. We look for her continued growth and success."

In addition, Ketzner has the opportunity to compete for an internship in London or Bermuda during the summer 2011 and the possibility of attending the annual NAPSLO Conference.

During her time at ISU, Ketzner has worked as an intern for German American Insurance in Jasper and as an intern with Old National Insurance in Indianapolis. She has also worked as the scholarship recruitment coordinator for the Gongaware Center while a student on campus.

Some of her honors and awards have included the 2010 Anita Benedetti Student Involvement Award (sponsored by the Risk and Insurance Management Society), recipient of the Gongaware Scholarship ($30,000 over four years for students pursuing a financial services-related degree), 2010 Richard E. Hull Scholarship sponsored by the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation, 2009 & 2010 Spencer Scholar, 2010 Angus Robinson Scholar, and the 2009 recipient of the Warren L. Weeks Sr. National Scholarship sponsored through Gamma Iota Sigma Grand Chapter. In addition, Ketzner is a member of the Insurance and Risk Management Honors Corps (GPA of 3.6 or above) and has served as president of Gamma Iota Sigma - a professional fraternity for risk management, insurance and actuarial science students.

A graduate of Forest Park High School, Ketzner is the daughter of Joe and Karen Ketzner of Ferdinand.
