Davis named associate VP for student affairs

August 2, 2010

Nolan Davis, director of student activities and organizations at Indiana State University since August 2008, has been named associate vice president for student affairs.

The appointment comes amid a restructuring of the Division of Student Affairs to concentrate on student life initiatives aimed at helping the university increase enrollment and improve student success.

"Nolan has worked hard to develop more opportunities for students to get involved in campus life and reach their full potential. I look forward to working with him as we re-shape the Division of Student Affairs to play an even greater role in helping an increased number of students become fully engaged in this great campus and in the community and achieve the ultimate goal of completing a four-year degree," said Carmen Tillery, vice president for student affairs and dean of students.

Davis has worked for the past two years to expand leadership training and opportunities for students and increase the number of student organizations. New programs include the Sycamore Leadership Coalition, Student Leadership Awards, and two initiatives set to launch this fall: Club Week, designed to connect new students with organizations in their areas of interest, and Spotlight Entertainment, a student-run concerts committee.

"I have had the good fortune of working with a department of experts at Indiana State who have a high level of dedication," Davis said. "I became committed to ISU when I realized how committed the campus community was to the university."

As associate vice president, Davis will chair a campus life programming council aimed at improving coordination of campus-wide efforts and will be in charge of budget tracking and assessment for Student Affairs. He will oversee the areas of student activities and organizations, continuing to serve as director on an interim basis until a successor is named, student publications, and recreational sports. He will also oversee advising of the Student Government Association and Union Board.

"I am looking forward to meeting new people and building new relationships across the Division of Student Affairs," he said. "Finding the best way to move things forward for our students is the very purpose of a great university."

Prior to coming to Indiana State, Davis was the assistant to the vice president for student affairs at Northern Illinois University. While in that position, he was variously primary adviser to student government and Greek life, and an area coordinator for residential life. He also served as assistant to the president at Northern Illinois. While in that position, he chaired a crisis response task force that developed procedures used during the Feb. 14, 2008 mass shooting on the NIU campus.

He has served on the advisory board of the Illinois Center for Child Welfare and Education and is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the Great Lakes Association of College and University Housing Officers.

A 1992 graduate of Western Carolina University with a bachelor's degree in political science, Davis completed a master's in political science from Northeastern Illinois University in 1994.
