ISU student honored by Alpha Lambda Delta

July 27, 2010

An Indiana State University honors student and Networks Scholar is one of 35 students nationwide to receive a 2010-2011 Jo Anne Trow Scholarship, presented by the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for first year students.

Lindsey Butorac, a sophomore management and marketing major from Bloomington, Ill., was among more than 110 applicants nominated for the scholarship from more than 60 chapters nationwide. She will receive $1,000 for the 2010-11 academic year.

In addition to serving as president of Indiana State's Alpha Lambda Delta chapter, Butorac has served as hall council president and as a resident assistant for Rhoads Hall. She is active in the University Honors Program, Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity, where she is treasurer and mentor to pledges and is director of the sophomore special events team for the Networks Scholarship program.

"She has done admirable work as the Alpha Lambda Delta president, using her intellect and skills of persuasion to engage many new initiates, as well as current chapter members," said Greg Bierly, director of Indiana State's University Honors Program.

A constant presence on the Dean's List, Butorac was recently named the recipient of the Richard Brett Memorial Scholarship for study abroad from the Honors Program.

"Lindsey is a natural born leader who thrives under the mantle of responsibility," Bierly added. "In addition to her academic success, she is interested in expanding her views through new opportunities and experiences."

Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society that recognizes and encourages academic excellence among first-year students. Since its inception, the society has grown to 265 campuses throughout the United States and has included more than 750,000 members in its 85-year history. The society initiates more than 25,000 new members annually, recognizing students who have attained a 3.5 or higher grade-point average in their first year or term of studies.

Each year, National Alpha Lambda Delta awards up to 35 Trow scholarships to outstanding students across the country. Named in honor of JoAnne J. Trow, a national past president of Alpha Lambda Delta, the competition is open to sophomore members of the society who have maintained the required GPA. Selection is based on academic records, participation in Alpha Lambda Delta activities, applicants' statements, and campus and community activities.
