Roby George, former associate professor of music and assistant director of bands at the University of Illinois, has been named director of bands at Indiana State University.
Before arriving at ISU, George served as director of bands at Florida International University, the University of Dayton and Fisk University. He was the founding director of bands at the New World School of the Arts in Miami and worked as an assistant at the Boston Latin High School.
"We are thrilled that a person of Roby George's expertise and renown has joined our music faculty," said Nancy Cobb Lippens, chair of the ISU Music Department. "Along with being an outstanding musician and conductor, Dr. George is energetic and collaborative. I and other music faculty look forward to working with him."
George, a graduate of Florida State University with a bachelor's degree in music education and a master's degree in music education, obtained his doctorate of musical arts in wind conducting at the University of Cincinnati-College Conservatory of Music.
He has conducted wind ensembles and orchestras nationally and internationally at the high school and collegiate levels, including a performance of the Greater Miami Youth Symphony at Carnegie Hall in New York.
Much of his history as an educator has been spent building and developing programs in places where the focus was on cutting-edge innovation.
George is currently working on a conducting book that will focus on the effectiveness of the gesture, using live video representation and analysis of conductors, both orchestral and wind in their active and natural setting.
During his tenure at Florida International University, George held an annual wind conducting symposium that attracted young conductors from all over America.
He continues to conduct clinic ensembles nationwide.
George, a member of the College Band Directors National Association, served the organization for seven years as the Florida chair. He is also a member of the Illinois Music Educators Association, the College Music Society and the Music Educators National Association.
