Terre Haute, Ind. - The works of 20 local artists will be showcased in a motorsports-inspired art exhibition at Indiana State University from April 26-May 8.
The first-ever Artomobilia exhibition, a collaborative effort between the Motorsports Studies Program, College of Arts and Sciences and the ISU department of art, will be on display in the Bare-Montgomery Art Gallery, located in Fairbanks Hall on Seventh Street.
Ten of the artists are students, representing two colleges and an area high school. Darius Cullens, Alexandra McNichols, Gurinder Singh, Christian Ethridge, Petra Nyendick and Shawna Vencel, Indiana State; Adam Carlson, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology; and Jeramy Richardson, Kayla Pepelea and Dan Rowe of South Vermillion High School.
Professionals exhibiting as part of the show include Beth Hoke, Catherine Knight, Christy Brinkman, David Erickson, Jim McMullen, Linda Janosko, Mike Swagerle, Monty Jones, Pat McLaughlin and Phillip Dees.
A public reception will be held Friday, April 30, from 6-9 p.m. in the Gallery with an awards ceremony scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
The inspiration for the exhibition is the private racecar collection of Don Smith, president and chairman of First Financial Corp.
"The exhibition is another way to show appreciation to Don Smith for his support of our motorsports program and its drag racing team," said Joyce Young, director of motorsports studies at Indiana State.
The exhibit, featuring 33 works, will be juried by Evan Lurie, gallery director of the Evan Lurie Gallery in Carmel.
Lurie, who represents more than 40 fine artists in corporate and private venues in the Indianapolis area and far beyond, specializes in finding new and bold artists who demonstrate excellence in skill and artistic sense. The Carmel gallery is one of three upscale fine art galleries owned by Lurie. The other two are located in Miami and Beverly Hills.
The exhibition is free and open to the public. Bare-Montgomery Gallery hours for this exhibit are Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The gallery will be open Saturday, May 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
