Three Indiana State University students have been recognized as American Humanics Next Generation Nonprofit Leaders and will each receive $4,500 scholarships from the national organization.

Lynn Gutierrez, senior elementary education and special education major from Terre Haute, Aliya Khan, junior psychology major from Clinton, and Kelsey Pearman, senior life sciences major from Rockville, were selected as ISU's NextGen Leaders.

American Humanics is a national alliance of colleges, universities, and national nonprofit organizations that strives to certify college students as entry-level nonprofit managers.

The three ISU students competed with more than 150 other students who applied from the 75 American Humanics-affiliated colleges and universities in the United States. The applications were reviewed by a panel of national nonprofit leaders.

NextGen is a competitive internship scholarship program, funded by a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. It is designed to help a racially and ethnically diverse group of students with demonstrated leadership potential complete their American Humanics certification requirements including a 300-hour nonprofit internship.

Assistant Professor of Recreation/Sport Management Nathan Schaumleffel, ISU's executive director of the ISU American Humanics program, said since January 2009, a total of nine ISU students have been awarded one of these scholarships and been recognized as NextGen Leaders.

"It is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the hard work, commitment, and high-quality students that ISU has on this campus," he said. "Our students' achievements are a reflection of ISU's focus and commitment to community engagement, public service, and service-learning and its commitment to the American Humanics program."
