Library welcomes students with Extravaganza

September 4, 2009

The Cunningham Memorial Library is gearing up for the seventh annual Library Extravaganza, which will be from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10.

"The whole point of the Extravaganza is to welcome back students and faculty who have been away for the summer, as well as new students and faculty, to let them see the services and products we have and also to let them know that the people who work in the library are friendly," Comer said. "We want students and faculty to come in and use it."

At the Extravaganza, ISU students, faculty and staff have the opportunity to win free prizes and learn more about the services the library offers. Students, faculty and staff will only be eligible for prizes if they go to 10 different presentations, get their cards stamped and turn the card into the prize table.

The grand prize of $500 cash is only open to ISU students. Other prizes include two $250 book vouchers, a parking hangtag, various restaurant coupons and even tickets to Community Theatre of Terre Haute.

"We will be giving away four prizes per hour beginning at 10:30," said Alberta Comer, dean of library services for the Cunningham Memorial Library.

Winners need not be present to win. The drawing for the big prizes will take place at 3 p.m.

Each person who comes in to the Extravaganza will receive a bag with free items in it. Those who come early, though, will receive more.

"The first 1,000 people who come will get a special gift," Comer said.

While some of the resources and services presented will be the same as previous years, such as the Writing Center, Career Center and interlibrary loan, some will be new.

"The Recycling Center will demonstrate how ISU recycles and how they can help you get green, too," Comer said.

Representatives from both financial aid and commuter student services, new to the Extravaganza, will be giving presentations on their respective departments. For the first time, Little Caesar's will be providing the pizza. Water, soda and popcorn will also be available free of charge to those in attendance.

The Extravaganza will also feature live music by the Southland band, which is composed of ISU staff and friends.

Last year, more than 5,000 people attended the Library Extravaganza, hosted by the Cunningham Memorial Library.

"We're hoping for a bigger crowd this year," said Carol Jinbo, Cunningham Memorial Library associate.
