Business professor receives national award for teaching excellence

An Indiana State University College of Business professor has once again received national recognition for his teaching.

Jon M. Hawes, professor of marketing, received the McGraw-Hill Irwin Sales Teacher of the Year Award at the American Marketing Association’s recent Summer Educators Conference in Chicago.

The marketing association's Sales Special Interest Group, in partnership with textbook publishers McGraw-Hill/Irwin, presented the award in recognition of Hawes’ excellence in sales teaching. He received a plaque and $1,500 and delivered a presentation about his classroom teaching to colleagues from around the world.

Competition for the award was open to full-time marketing educators who are members of the association’s Sales Special Interest Group and have displayed outstanding teaching in one or more sales classes.

"The College of Business is thrilled to have recruited a professor of Dr. Hawes' caliber to ISU. Sales and sales management are very strong career opportunities, and Hawes is an outstanding teacher and researcher. His expertise and energy in building curriculum and business participation will enhance skill development in business-to-business sales, communications, and negotiations, said Nancy J. Merritt, dean of the college.

Upon learning he had been nominated for the award, Hawes said he initially hesitated to apply because “there are so many really outstanding teachers within the discipline of sales. But I am glad that I went through the process because this can help bring awareness of the work we are doing to help students develop as sales professionals. Working with students is personally rewarding in and of itself, but being honored by my peers is also quite a treat," Hawes said.

An Indiana State alumnus with both bachelor's and master's degrees from the College of Business, Hawes joined the faculty at his alma mater in July. He previously served as a distinguished professor of marketing at the University of Akron where he founded the Fisher Institute of Professional Selling. He is currently building a sales and negotiations lab, due to be opened this fall, and is working toward establishing a new Sales and Negotiations Center which would engage business and other community members in the ISU program while providing consulting and specialized training to organizations.

The McGraw-Hill Irwin Award is the latest in a series of national honors for Hawes. He received the 2006 Prentice Hall Solomon-Marshall-Stuart Award for Innovative Excellence in Marketing, the 2004 Hormel Master Teacher Award from the Marketing Management Association, and the 2004 Academy of Marketing Science Outstanding Teachers in Marketing Award.
