TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Indiana State University Art Gallery welcomes "Collaborative Vision: The Poetic Dialogue Project," an exhibition running from July 14-Sept. 9.

Organized by artist and independent curator Beth Shadur, the exhibit is an ongoing collaboration between contemporary artists and poets. Thirty-one artists were paired with 31 poets from across the United States to produce new pieces, taking their work in unexpected directions with the strategic outside influence of a partner.

The poets supply pictures through words, prompting the artists to consider text and memoir in relationship to their studio work. The result crosses the boundaries between media and genre, reminding the audience that creators share a common goal of communication.

Shadur, curator of the project, is an artist and independent curator based in Chicago. She has exhibited widely throughout the United States and abroad, including at the Art Institute of Chicago; the Drawing Center in New York City and the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, NY. She has also created more than 125 large public murals in both the United States and Great Britain. Shadur has been a Ragdale Fellow and a Thomas Watson Fellow from Brown University, and served as executive director of Chicago's ARC Gallery.

Featured artists include Shadur, Jane Fulton Alt, Granite Amit, David Lloyd Brown, Kay Campbell, Cat Chow, Laura Ann Cloud, Shawn Decker, Deborah Adams Doering, Ana Fernandez, Michael Ferris, Shelley Gilchrist, Jane Hammond, Donna June Katz, Dianne Kornberg, Kim Laurel, Lynda Lowe, Susan Mackin-Dolan, Elizabeth R. Mears, James Mesple, Betty Ann Mocek, Gladys Nilsson, Laurel Paley, Bonnie Peterson, Charlotte Segal, May Stevens, LaShawnda Crowe Storm, Lynn Takata, Annette Turow, Mirjana Ugrinov and John Weber.

Poets participating in the project include Lois Roma-Deeley, Maria Eliza Abegunde, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Jan Beatty, LR Berger, Karen Brennan, Michael Burkard, Lisa D. Chávez, Martha Collins, Kathryn Dohrmann, B.H. Fairchild, Annie Finch, Beth Frost, Elisabeth Frost, Kate Gale, Maria Mazziotti Gillan, Beckian Fritz Goldberg, Eliose Healey, Michael Heller, Cynthia Hogue, Jeffrey Levine, L. Lindsey Mears, Steve Orlen, Greg Pape, Alan Michael Parker, Margaret Rozga, Michael Ryan, Barry Schwabsky, Peggy Shumaker, Maurya Simon, Nance Van Winckel and Cecilia Woloch.

A public reception will be held on Friday, July 17, from 6-9 p.m. Shadur, Storm and Abegunde will lecture on their creative work on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall. A public reception will be held that evening from 5-7 p.m. The exhibit, as well as all activities are free and open to the public.

The University Art Gallery is located in the Center for Performing and Fine Arts on the southwest corner of Seventh and Chestnut streets. Summer gallery hours are Monday- Friday from noon-4pm until Aug. 25. After Aug. 26 the gallery is open to the public Monday-Friday from 11am-4pm and Thursday from 11am-8pm.
