650 high school girls headed to ISU for Hoosier Girls State

June 19, 2009

Approximately 650 high school girls from throughout Indiana will form a 51st state during the coming week on the campus of Indiana State University.

The girls will be taking part in the 68th Hoosier Girls State June 21-27, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary of Indiana as a way of educating a select group of young women on the duties, rights, privileges and responsibilities of citizenship.

Through the creation of a fictitious 51st state, delegates will take part in a government exercise that will educate them on the structure of politics and government. Two delegates will be chosen to represent Indiana at Girls Nation near Washington, D.C.

Activities include elections of city, county and state officials - complete with rallies and "whistle stop" campaign speeches by candidates. The week will also feature public safety classes and demonstrations by Indiana State Police. The Hoosier Girls State governor, lieutenant governor and other officials will be sworn in on Thursday.

Girls elected to state offices will visit the Indiana state capitol on Friday and a variety show featuring the talents of the delegates will close things out on Friday evening.

The Hoosier Girls State program has been the recipient of the Freedom Foundation Award for outstanding achievement in bringing a better understanding to the American way of life.
