Wabash Valley residents no longer have to wait for special weekend events to safely and economically dispose of computers and other electronic items.

Beginning July 6, Indiana State University’s Recycle Center will accept e-scrap at its drive-through facility at Ninth and Sycamore streets.

Daily collection of computers, monitors and other electronic items has been made possible by state grants totaling more than $32,000 to the Recycle Center, TREES Inc. and Indianapolis-based WorkForce Inc.

Since 2007, roughly one million pounds of electronics have been collected for proper disposal during "E-scrap Super Saturdays" at ISU.

"Response to these events has been overwhelming. The Recycle Center and its partners are pleased that we have been able to keep these items from making their way into landfills," said Paul Reed, director of custodial and special services at Indiana State. "But we knew these efforts could only go so far in addressing the volume of outdated electronics. We’re pleased that we now have the funding and equipment in place to provide regular collection of these items."

Computers and related components and small electronics will be accepted without charge during the Recycle Center’s regular hours, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6 a.m. to noon on Saturdays and Sundays.

Because of the additional expense incurred by accepting televisions, collection of TVs will be limited to "TV Tuesdays" once per quarter beginning July 7. Additional TV Tuesdays are scheduled for October 6, January 5, 2010 and April 6, 2010.

To help defer the costs of processing TVs and transporting them to Indianapolis for de-manufacturing and recycling, a fee of $5 for 27-inch and smaller sets and $10 for sets larger than 27 inches.
