Visions and Voices looking for Sullivan County history

May 12, 2009

In a search for history, Wabash Valley Visions and Voices (WV3) is journeying to the Sullivan County Historical Museum on Saturday.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 16, WV3 and the historical society are sponsoring a Community History Day at the society's museum at 10 South Court St. in Sullivan. While WV3 project staff and society members will be digitizing photographs and documents in the museum's collection, they also are looking for historical artifacts, documents and photographs from within the community.

Cinda May, project manager for Wabash Valley Visions and Voices and chair of the Indiana State University digital and archival services, said this is the opportunity for Sullivan County residents to bring in photographs, brochures, posters, church histories and community event information to have it added to the database and the historical society's collection.

"We're looking for any items that relate to events and history of Sullivan County," May said.

All items will be scanned or photographed while the owner waits. All images of the items then will be part of the historical society's collection and WV3's searchable database at http://visions.indstate.edu/.

Established in April 2004, WV3 Digital Memory Project provides free access to more than 56,000 items related to the history and cultural heritage of the Wabash Valley through the Internet. Participating organizations are: the city of Terre Haute, the Clinton Public Library, the Coal Town and Railroad Museum, Educational Heritage Association, Eugene V. Debs Museum, Indiana State University Archives, Indiana State University Communications and Marketing, Indiana State University Folklore Archives, Indiana State University Cunningham Memorial Library, the Knox County Public Library, Little Italy Town Festival, the Native American Museum, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, the Sullivan County Historical Society, the Sullivan County Public Library, the town of Seelyville, the Vigo County Historical Society and the Vigo County Public Library.
