Officials from Indiana State University have been in contact with state and county health officials to monitor and prepare for any potential swine flu outbreak in our area. As of Friday, May 1, three cases of swine flu (H1N1) had confirmed statewide in Indiana and 141 cases nationally.

As a point of clarification, swine flu is not caused by eating pork. It is transmitted through human to human contact as is the case with seasonal flu.

Flu prevention tips

Here are a few reminders about preventing the flu from Student Health Promotion:

- Wash your hands frequently with warm, soapy water for at least 15 seconds
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing; it may prevent those around you from getting sick
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
- Keep surfaces clean and disinfect them regularly
- Eat right - a balanced diet can ensure all the nutrients your body needs to maintain your immune system
- Sleep - not getting adequate rest will weaken your immune system
- Exercise - research shows that people who exercise regularly have fewer illnesses

Symptoms of flu

The symptoms of swine flu are very similar to seasonal flu symptoms. The symptoms include:
- chills
- fever (usually high - over 100)
- headache
- extreme tiredness
- dry cough
- runny or stuffy nose
- sore throat
- muscle aches

If you are sick, stay home. Visit a doctor if you exhibit flu-like symptoms -- especially if you are running a high fever. Call ahead to the doctor's office so that you don't sit in the waiting room and expose others to your illness.
