Cecilia "CeCee" Emmons, a business administration and insurance and risk management major at Indiana State University, has been awarded a summer internship by the National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices (NAPSLO).

The nine-week, paid internship offers hands-on experience in the surplus lines industry through placement at member firms. Students work five weeks for a NAPSLO member insurance company and four weeks with a NAPSLO member wholesale broker firm. Interns receive a competitive salary from host firms, while NAPSLO provides a stipend, housing and airfare or travel expenses. Interns also compete for an additional internship in London that takes place the following summer.

Emmons will spend five weeks at Great American Custom in Cincinnati, followed by four weeks at Westrope in Kansas City, Mo.

"I applied to NAPSLO because I am interested in the excess and surplus lines industry and have heard many great things about the internship program and all the opportunities that can follow the internship," Emmons said. "I like that it is a rotational internship. I will have the opportunity to learn different aspects in both the carrier and brokerage side. I am honored to be chosen as an intern for such a strong internship program. I look forward to my experience with each company."

The internship program was established in 1981 to interest students in the surplus lines industry, which handles unique, unusual or hard to place risks. More than 150 students have participated in the program since its inception and more than half of the former interns are currently working in the insurance industry. Many are employed by NAPSLO member firms.

"CeCee has shown her leadership potential here on campus and I'm confident she will represent ISU's insurance and risk management program well as our latest student selected for this terrific opportunity. She'll be working for two of the nation's leading insurance organizations handling unique risk exposures in the excess and surplus lines insurance market. This is a great developmental opportunity for a young insurance professional."

Emmons, a junior at ISU, is the daughter of Cecil and Marilyn Emmons of French Lick. She works as an office assistant in the ISU admissions office.

She is a member of Sycamore Outreach; the Student Alumni Association; Chi Omega; National Society of Collegiate Scholars; Insurance Honors Corp; and Gamma Iota Sigma, the risk management, insurance and actuarial science collegiate fraternity. She also participated in a study abroad program in London.
