ISU's Networks Financial Institute presents third annual Insurance Summit in Washington, D.C.

Should there be a federal role in insurance chartering and regulation? If so, how might this impact the industry? Leading figures in financial services and government will share key issues and perspectives on the effects and potential of insurance reform as part of the third Networks Financial Institute (NFI) Insurance Summit March 1 in Washington, D.C. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center.

The summit is presented by NFI at Indiana State University and contributing sponsor B&D Consulting LLC, and will include featured speakers such as:

Scott Harrington, who is Alan B. Miller Professor at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, will discuss "Federal Charters for Insurance Companies: Options and Alternatives;" Harrington is former president of both the American Risk and Insurance Association and the Risk Theory Society and is currently on the Shadow Financial Regulatory Committee (American Enterprise Institute).

Keynote speaker Rep. Paul E. Kanjorski (D-PA), House Financial Services Committee;

Speakers on pending legislation, such as Jamie Burnett, legislative director for Senator John Sununu (R-NH) and Glen Westrick, counsel for the House Financial Services Committee;

Emil Henry, assistant secretary for financial institutions, U.S. Department of the Treasury, who serves as an advisor to the Secretary of Treasury, Deputy Secretary and Undersecretary of Domestic Finance on matters regarding financial institutions legislation and regulation, legislation affecting federal agencies that regulate or insure financial institutions, securities markets legislation and regulation, and the promotion of consumer access and protection in financial services.

In addition to the featured speakers, an industry panel discussion is scheduled and will include: Charles E. Symington, Jr., senior vice president, Government Affairs and Federal Relations, Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America; J. Kevin McKechnie, associate director, Government Relations, American Bankers Insurance Association; Gary E. Hughes, executive vice president and general counsel, American Council of Life Insurers; J. Stephen Zielezienski, senior vice president and general counsel, American Insurance Association; and Richard M. Bouhan, executive director, National Association of Professional Surplus Lines Offices.
