March 22 2006
WHAT: This is the second session of its kind during which ISU staff in the controller and payroll offices work in tandem with ISU accounting majors to assist international students with federal and state tax preparation - free of charge - prior to the April 17, 2006 filing date.
WHEN: Thursday, March 23, 2006, from 1 to 3 p.m.
WHERE: Myers Technology Building, Room 101 E
WHO: Several ISU accounting students have participated in this effort and have been specially trained to conduct these sessions and assist with these filings. During the last session, taxes were prepared for more than 75 international students. That represents more than 230 tax forms that had to be filled out and filed.
Joe Sanders, program coordinator and professor of accounting in Indiana State University's College of Business, recruited the students for the project. The students gave up an entire day out of their schedules to attend IRS training. They also had to take a test to become Certified VITA tax preparers. The accounting students who received special training and who assist with this service-learning project include:
- Ashley Cribelar, junior, Martinsville, Ill. - E-mail: acribelar@indstate.edu
- Mallory Kirchner, junior, Brazil, Ind. - E-mail: mkirchner@mymail.indstate.edu
- Maranda Summers, senior, Indianapolis - E-mail: msummers4@mymail.indstate.edu
- Kaitlin Korosi, junior, Batesville, Ind. - E-mail: kkorosi@mymail.indstate.edu
Members of the controller and payroll staffs who participate in this effort include: Jeff Jacso, Hope Waldbieser, Catherine Procarione, Stacy Hammond, Kathy Abernathy, Robert Anthrop, Mike Bonnett, Chip Rogers and Louise Jackson.
WHY: In most countries these students are not used to dealing with tax filing because either there is no tax, or there is a flat tax and the money is taken right out of their paychecks so there is no filing at year end. In addition, tax forms in the U.S. can be very intimidating to these students.
