29 bands to compete in
Mid-States Marching Contest at ISU

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. Twenty-nine high school bands will participate in the 19th annual Mid-States Marching Band Contest Sept. 21 at Indiana State University's Memorial Stadium. The gates open at 8 a.m.

Four classes of bands based on high school enrollment will be competing. Class D bands, the smallest, begin performing at 9 a.m.; Class C at 11:23 a.m.; Class B, the next to largest at 3:12 p.m. and Class A, the largest, at 4:30 p.m. The ISU Marching Sycamores will give exhibition performances at 1:07 p.m. and 5:48 p.m.

Four bands will be defending their previous first-place finishes at the ISU contest. Brazil's Northview, in Class B, has received the top honors every year since 1991, Heritage Hills High School, in Class C, will be defending its title and Rising Sun High School will return to try and capture another first place spot in Class D. Ben Davis will take the field in defense of not only their previous Class A championship, but the sweepstakes trophy as well.

The top three bands in each class will receive a trophy and the best overall band will be awarded the sweepstakes trophy. Special awards will be given in each class for the best visual performance, winds, percussion, auxiliary units and drum major.

Tickets will be available at the stadium the day of the contest at a cost of $5 for adults, $3 for non-ISU students and senior citizens, and free to ISU students with an I.D. Proceeds will be used for music scholarships at ISU.

On October 19, the Indiana State School Music Association Regional Marching Band Contest will also be held at ISU for the second time.
