1. When does the new ISU Smoking Policy start?
The policy goes into effect on July 1, 2009.
  2. Whom does the policy affect?
This policy affects students, faculty, staff and visitors to campus. We urge everyone to cooperate with civility and good will in complying with this policy.
  3. Is there anywhere I can smoke?
There will be designated areas around campus where smoking is permitted.
  4. Can I smoke in my personal car?
Parking lots and the parking garage located on campus are included in the ban, however, there will be no effort to enforce the ban in private vehicles located on university property provided users make a reasonable effort to contain smoke and smoking materials inside the vehicle (e.g.. keeping windows closed)
  5. Isn’t this violating my civil rights?
No. The Trustees of ISU have the authority to govern the use of university property and regulate its use.
  6. Why should I comply?
We hope civility and respect for others will guide all of us during the transition toward a smoke-free campus. We realize that this policy may be taxing for some tobacco users but we hope that smokers will respect the right of their fellow members of the university community to breathe smoke-free air. We also hope that non-smokers who feel compelled to remind violators of the smoke-free policy will do so with courtesy and civility.
  7. Do I have to quit using tobacco?
No. The current policy applies restrictions to the use of smoking tobacco and not all tobacco products. The university cannot compel you to quit using either.
  8. What resources are available to help me stop using tobacco products:
For benefit-eligible employees there are various prescriptions that are covered under either the health benefits program and/or the flexible spending account program that are available to assist you to stop smoking. Also, smoking cessation programs are offered on campus for students, faculty and staff and by a number of agencies in the Terre Haute area.
  9. Whom should I contact if I still have questions about the policy?
    Faculty: Human Resources at 237-4114
University Staff: Human Resources at 237-4114
